School Uniforms Erase Stigma for Marginalized Basarwa San Girls in Botswana and Orphan Girls in Swaziland

Community involvement in scholar selection means no dropouts in first two terms.

Botswana and Swaziland

Orphaned scholars and Basarwa San girls never had uniforms before. Many dropped out in the past due to stigma and because they lacked uniforms. Orphanaid included uniforms along with school fees as part of the AEI-AGSP scholarship. Now these girls are no longer identifiable by their clothing; they go to school and perform just like other students.

Local partners worked with the local communities to ensure community participation in the scholar selection process. All the girls selected as AEI-AGSP primary school scholars by their communities were still in school at the end of the second term.

This page will be updated periodically to show you more pictures of the AEI-AGSP local partner project managers of region 3 and the work they are doing to provide basic education for primary school girls.
